Netball League was formed on the 30th April 1953. The league
committee consisted of just three people – The Honorary League
Secretary Colin Lulman and a representative from two member clubs Mr
Pentacost from Ecko and Miss King from Gaslight. Thirteen teams made up
the only division.
Canvey YC were the first winners of the league and were presented with the Willis, Faber and Dumas cup which is still in use today. The initial season was run with just six rules. In 1954 Peter Grimes became the first Chairman of the league. Both Colin and Peter are still involved in the league. Due to ill health Colin is unable to attend our functions but is in communication with current members of the committee updating him with the news. Peter still attends functions particularly the Cup Finals, he was our guest of honour at the 2000 finals and is always hiding at the back at the AGM. The league currently has 32 teams in four divisions of 8. We were pleased to welcome three new teams to the 2000/2001 season. The closing date for entry to the league is the 30th April every season. Teams can obtain an application pack from the league secretary. The league can sometimes accommodate teams after this date providing they apply before the AGM in June. Since its inception back in 1953 two other leagues have been formed - the Junior League and the Friendly League. To avoid confusion the original league is now known as the Open League. |
