Following a request of the AENA back in 2001, the SDNL arranged its matches so they did not clash the the English Counties League. This meant that most players were happy playing every week before Christmas but felt a little bit at a loose end between January & April. This was especially apparent if they did not play in the rallies or were knocked out early in the cup competition.

In order to address the above problem, and the needs of those people who did not wish to either play, officiate or watch county matches, the Friendly League was created.
